Britain’scompetitionwatchdogistoinvestigatehotelbookingsitesoverconcernsthatconsumersarebeingmisled,pressured,andpreventedfromfindingthebestdeals.

TheCompetitionandMarketsAuthoritysaiditwouldlookintowhethersiteswereusingpressuretacticstorushcustomersintobookingrooms,andwhethertheywerepushinghotelsbasedonthecommissiontheyreceive,inwhatcouldamounttoabreachofconsumerlaw.

About70%ofpeopleresearchinghotelslastyearusedbookingsites,whichincludeTrivago,booking.com,ExpediaandLateRooms.TheCMAsaidconsumersneededtobeconfidenttheyaregettingthebestdeal.

“Sitesneedtogivetheircustomersinformationthatisclear,accurateandpresentedinawaythatenablespeopletochoosethebestdealforthem,”saidAndreaCoscelli,chiefexecutiveoftheCMA.“Butweareconcernedthatthisisnothappeningandthattheinformationonsitesmayinfactbemakingitdifficultforpeopletomaketherightchoice.

“That’swhywehavestartedourinvestigationintothissector–togettothebottomoftheseissues,seewhethersitesarebreakingconsumerlawandmakesuretheyhelp,nothinder,peoplesearchingfortheirnexthotelroom.”

TheCMAwillinvestigatewhethersitestrytorushcustomersintomakingadecisionbycreatingafalseimpressionofroomavailability,statinghowmanyroomsareleftorhowlongapriceisavailable.

Otherareasofconcernincludesitespotentiallysteeringcustomerstowardshotelsbasedontheamountofcommissiontheyearnfromabooking,andhiddenchargessuchastaxesandbookingfeeswhichmightonlyberevealedattheendoftheprocess.

TheCMAhaswrittentocompaniesacrossthesectoraskingforinformationabouttheirpracticesandwantstohearfromconsumersabouttheirexperiences.
